Angela Carter

The Bloody Chamber

To begin the approach to this project, I bought the book and firstly read the first story in the book 'The Bloody Chamber'. This is the story of a young, innocent lady who has just married her wealthy, older husband. The story is told by the young lady. She begins by explaining events before the marraige painting a picture of their type of relationship and outilining each character. She then goes on to talk about the train journey to her new husbands castle and describes the string of horrifying events that begin to unfold.
There are a few different parts of the story that I may be interested in Illustrating. There is a section at the begining where the young lady describes an outing to the ballet. Her husband gifts her with a very expensive choker necklace and dress, and the way in which she describes how she feels about the items of leisure.

Other Illustrations

I took a trip to the library with my 3 year old daughter and had a look through some of the childrens books to see if any of the illustration styles appealed to me. I have never done an illustration project before and so this was all very interesting. I saw alot of watercolour being used with charcoal, and although alot of the styles were the same as others, I did come across a few very interesting books.

Shaun Tan
Kagan Gunar

Sara Fanelli

Neal Layton

Personally I think that Sarah Fanelli's is very inspiring. I think that I would like to do something similar to the type of illlustration that she does. I was thinking of using a few different medias. Possible using Typography and paper cut out outs to make up different characters and scenes. Here is some more of her work.

I am very interested in looking at that sort of paper cut out style illustration. Here are some other examples that I have looked at.

Owen Gildersleeve

Andy Bartlett

Luke Best

Some Work I have Done

After looking at the work of many other illustrators, I have decided that I would like to use Shaun Tan as an influence when planning my layouts, and would like to use Sara Fanelli as Influence while doing my Illustrations.

I think that using Handwriting, or a messy sort of font, I could acheive something quite visually appealing.

The Bloody Chamber

Here, I have taken pages from books, magazines, Newspapers and old Annuals to create a type of collage on Paper. I think this looks really well and you can see that I am beginning to think of layout and Imagery.

Here I used Acrylic Paints, Newspaper and PVA glue, and Pen and Paper. I wanted to make this peice messy but nice, with lots going on and lots to look at. I want this Image to get the Imagination going as I think that is what an Illustration should always do. Absorb the reader into the story.

Here I edited this Image in Photoshop. I added filters and made use of cloning, brigtness and contrast, I pasted Parts in and added some Typeography for no other reason than to enhance the look of the Image. I am quite pleased with this.

The Company of Wolves

As I thought about this story, there were many parts that stood out to me, but mostly I thought of the dangerous journey through the forest, and how the young girl had no fear. When I think about journeys, I think about maps, and so I decided to draw my own map up of the story.

I then thought of using quite a sarah Fanelli technique and began using images of textures and colours to make up the characters. I also thought of the way sarah Fanelli puts her characters together and this is what I came up with. Again, I am quite pleased with this Image

This is what I came up with for puss in boots, it is a selection of parts from different images to create a collage sort of effect.
